The film’s American palette follows Ben through Los Angeles — sometimes conspicuous, sometimes nearly imperceptible. As his carefully controlled world begins to fracture, those colors become inseparable from the question at the center of the film: what does being a good American actually require?
Shot entirely on location in Los Angeles, the film moves through cars, streets, industrial spaces and the hours after most of the city has gone home. Even sequences set in Tehran were created in Los Angeles.
At its center, The Good American is about a refugee who believes belonging requires invisibility — until circumstances force him to discover the opposite. The film asks what citizenship means when belonging can still feel conditional, and what it costs to stand up for someone else.
